Herbert was born in Derbyshire, on the 15th June 1875. He enlisted in Montreal, Quebec, 6th December, 1915, stating his occupation as a prospector, and his next of kin as William Grindey, of Beeley, Derbyshire.
He was five feet eleven inches in height, had a fair complexion, blue eyes and fair hair, and belonged to the Church of England. He had 'Herbert Grindey' tattooed on his right forearm.
